Beinn an Tuirc Distillery occupies a former piggery building located on Torrisdale Castle Estate in Kintyre, Scotland, just to the north of Campbeltown, the old whisky capital of the world.
Kintyre Gin
London Dry Gin made by Beinn An Tuirc in Campbeltown, Scotland
How It’s Made
In making our gin we use OUR OWN WATER SUPPLY sourced from a Victorian spring high above the distillery. No chemicals are used to treat the water, which shines through in the purity of our spirit. Our small distillery and gin still are powered from our own on-site hydro-electric scheme. We use less than 10% of the total energy produced, making us a significant net exporter of electricity.
Tasting Notes
To achieve the characteristics of a very flavoursome and well-balanced spirit, the gin consists of 10 commonly used botanicals, with the addition of 2 which are unique, namely Icelandic moss and sheep sorrel – both grow on the estate in abundance.
Either through maceration or vapour infusion, these produce a gin which our expert tasting panel described as having earthy and spicy characteristics, being deep in flavour, with a very pleasant floral aroma. A true taste of Kintyre!
Why We Like It
We use a certified organic grain neutral spirit to make our gin. Our botanicals and ingredients are from SUSTAINABLE SOURCES carefully selected to complement our spirit. Spent botanicals are composted in our walled garden, which in turn helps to fertilise our next crop of organic apples! Local distiller Leon Webb developed the 'Kintyre Gin' and helped get Beinn An Tuirc Distillers up and running and was involved at the start if you like. In general though, the distillery is in a lovely setting in the Torrisdale Castle Estate and the stills are powered by a hydro-electric scheme on-site making them leaders in 'sustainable distilling'.
The distillery is independent and is a family affair.
